The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced on Tuesday that its districts, station, and sub-station have been placed under heightened alert status as the opening of classes draws near.
In a statement, the agency said its PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu wanted to ensure passengers' safety, security and comfortable travel in port areas.
The Coast Guard also said its personnel will closely watch the volume of travelers and will heighten the inspection of boats.
Additional Coast Guard K9 units will be deployed to thwart potential illegal activities, it noted.
The PCG assured the public that the "contingency plan for emergency responses" is ready in case there will be maritime accidents.
The Coast Guard said the public can expect that it will provide a 24/7 service in a bid to achieve a "zero casualty" incident.
