The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will be on heightened alert to ensure the safe travel of passengers in ports and waterways nationwide during Holy Week.
In a press statement, the agency said all PCG districts, stations, and sub-stations will "intensify seaborne patrols and safety measures" starting this Satuday, March 24 and will go on until March 31 as directed by PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan.
"Coast Guard personnel will conduct 24/7 monitoring of nautical highways in western and eastern seaboards, including inter-island routes," PCG said, adding that PCG Auxiliary volunteers will assist PCG personnel in the operations.

As per the agency, Coast Guard medical officers tasked to respond in case of emergencies will be deployed in port terminals and vessels as well as Coast Guard K9 units and security teams.
PCG said it aimed for “zero maritime casualty” during Holy Week.
"The PCG works with the DOTr’s Maritime Sector agencies, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), in performing vessel safety and security inspections, as well as reminding passengers to remain alert during their sea travel," PCG said.
"Coast Guard units also assist the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in manning critical checkpoints to ensure public safety and security, especially in highly-populated tourist areas," it continued.
