President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. vowed on Monday to lead the country as it recovers from the catastrophic impacts of the coronavirus outbreak by overcoming hurdles and pursuing a high-growth path.

The President led the country in commemorating the 125th anniversary of Philippine independence with the theme "Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan."

In his toast remarks during the Vin d’honneur at Malacañang Palace, Marcos said that the celebration has taken on a whole new meaning as the country marks the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence with renewed hopes and a spirited resolve to rise anew as a nation.

The President hoped that this year's celebration and memorial would serve as a constant reminder to Filipinos that it is only through national unity and solidarity that they can protect the freedom achieved by their forefathers.

He urged Filipinos to look to the past as they set their sights on the horizon, where a brighter future awaits the country.

Marcos also expressed hope that the country could continue to deepen connections with members of the diplomatic community, calling for ways "to take our relations to new heights."

The Vin d'honneur is a customary New Year's Day and Philippine Independence Day event thrown by the President of the Philippines at Malacañang Palace.

Vin d'honneur is a French term that means "wine of honor," and it is served at the conclusion of inaugurations, speeches, and ceremonies.
