President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has suspended classes in public schools at all levels and government offices work in Metro Manila and Bulacan on August 25, the opening ceremonies of the highly-anticipated FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Based on Memorandum Circular No. 27 dated August 15 and released on August 16, the suspension was declared to extend the government's full support and assistance to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in "ensuring the safe, orderly, and successful" conduct of the opening ceremonies that will be held at the Philippine Arena in the Municipality of Bocaue, Bulacan.

"The suspension for work for private companies and classes in private schools is left to the discretion of their respective heads," the order reads.

But operations will continue and not be disrupted in agencies whose functions are to serve basic and health services, provide disaster and calamities response, and others who offer vital services.

The circular was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

The 19th edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup will run from August 25 until September 10.
