Marcos upgrades 2 state colleges, establishes 5 college of medicine programs

President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. has signed into law seven legislative bills that aim to upgrade two higher education institutions (HEIs) and establish medicine programs in five other HEIs.

Republic Act (RA) No. 11968 and RA No. 11969 mandated the conversion into regular campuses of Leyte Normal University (LNU) - San Isidro Satellite campus and Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU)-Bagac Extension Campus.

The two universities shall be renamed as:

  • LNU San Isidro Satellite campus as LNU-San Isidro

  • BPSU -Bagac Extension campus as BPSU-Bagac Campus

Under RA No. 11970, RA No. 11971, RA No. 11972, and RA No. 11974, the President approved the establishment of a College of Medicine in the following universities:

  • Benguet State University in in La Trinidad, Benguet

  • Southern Luzon State University main campus in Lucban, Quezon

  • University of Eastern Philippines in Catarman, Northern Samar

  • Visayas State University in Baybay, Leyte

Meanwhile, RA No. 11973 mandated the establishment of a College of Veterinary Medicine at the Bicol University in Ligao, Albay.

Each law had the signatories of Senate President Miguel 'Migz' Zubiri, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr., and House Secretary General Reginald Velasco.

The laws got Marcos’ seal of approval on Dec. 20 and were posted on the Official Gazette’s website on Dec. 27.
