President Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the construction of a stronger and permanent bridge to replace the aging Bridge of Promise, which has shown signs of structural deterioration.
According to Vince Dizon, Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the bridge was originally built as a temporary structure in 2009 but has remained in use for 17 years. It serves as a vital link for residents traveling between Barangay Kumintang Ibaba and Barangay Gulod Labac in Batangas City.
Dizon said the DPWH has requested ₱300 million under the proposed 2027 national budget to fund the expansion and reinforcement of the replacement bridge. The new structure is expected to be wider, more durable, and compliant with updated engineering and safety standards to withstand heavier traffic loads and extreme weather conditions.
The project forms part of the president's directive to conduct immediate assessments and retrofitting of aging and vulnerable bridges nationwide to ensure public safety. The DPWH has been undertaking inspections across the country, prioritizing critical infrastructure that connects communities and supports local economic activity.
Once funded and approved, the bridge replacement project is expected to improve mobility, reduce safety risks, and provide a long-term infrastructure solution for thousands of daily commuters in Batangas City.
