President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. instructed incoming Department of Education Secretary Senator Sonny Angara to strengthen the country’s education curriculum and bolster the teaching of Philippine history in schools.
“One thing I asked of him was to please teach our children Philippine history, because I have seen my children’s workbooks, and there’s very little said about the history of the Philippines, and for me that is so important,” Marcos said in an interview on Friday, July 5.
Marcos believes that PH history teachings can make a child understand about the culture and what it truly means to be a Filipino.
Previously, the teaching of Philippine history stopped at grade 6 during the leadership of Leonor Briones as the education secretary.
Additionally, Marcos urged for an enhanced and simplified curriculum to improve employability among learners. He reiterated the importance of going back to basics.
“We will also simplify the curriculum so that we go back to make sure everybody understands the basics,” Marcos said.
Senator Sonny Angara is set to assume office as the Education secretary on July 19, 2024 following the resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte last June 19.
