President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Tuesday, July 2, the appointment of Senator Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny Angara’ as the new secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).
During a cabinet meeting, Marcos mentioned the vast legislative history of the Senator in several educational reforms including the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act and the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (K-12).
The Chief Executive highlighted the significant role of the DepEd and its requirement for a capable leader who can oversee its extensive operations.
Meanwhile, Angara expressed his gratitude to the president for entrusting him with the position. He also mentioned that he accepts it with humility and a profound sense of duty.
"I am committed to working with all sectors of society, including my predecessor, Vice President Sara Duterte, to ensure that every Filipino child has access to quality education. I look forward to building upon her accomplishments," Angara said in a statement.

The Senator is set to replace Vice President Sara Duterte in office on July 19, 2024.
Duterte resigned as the Education Secretary last June 19, 2024.
