The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday, February 14, said that it intends to use passenger biometrics to expedite the airport processing and create swift movement for travelers.

“The future is now [...] biometrics passenger processing will significantly make the Philippine airport experience more pleasant, more efficient,” Transportation Usec. for Aviation and Airports Sector Roberto Lim said.

According to DOTr, passengers can swiftly move in the airport’s entrance, check in, attend final boarding pass check to airside, and boarding with the biometric facial scan and biometric data in the passport.

“[P]articipants from the country’s airport operators were provided with a full view of the benefits of putting the process and technologies in place in airports as gleaned from the many international reference sites,” the transport agency’s statement read.

The country’s participants were Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Clark International Airport Corporation, Davao International Airport Authority (DIAA), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines with GMR- Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation and Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corporation representing the private sector.

CAAP and DIAA were reportedly looking into a pilot operation while local stakeholders anticipate the process’ implementation.
