On Saturday, House of Representatives Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez assured barangay officials that progress is being made on the Magna Carta for Barangays. This initiative aims to provide barangay officials with Social Security System (SSS) benefits, including a proposed fixed term of six years.
Romualdez highlighted these goals during the Liga ng mga Barangay (LNB) meeting on Tuesday. The proposed Magna Carta not only seeks to secure SSS benefits for barangay officials but also to provide them with life insurance and a lifetime pension upon retirement, all at no cost.
A proposal to grant barangay officials a fixed term of six years has already been filed before the House of Representatives.
“Umaasa ako na magiging katuwang namin kayo sa pagbubuo ng batas na ito. Hinihikayat ko kayong lahat na magpasa ng mga position papers at ipagpatuloy ang ating ugnayan upang masigurong maisama ang inyong mga kahilingan sa panukalang ito,” he said.
(We are expecting to craft this measure with your coordination. I am encouraging you all to submit position papers and continue our partnership to ensure that your requests are heard)
He emphasized the crucial role of the LNB in connecting local communities with the national government and public services
Village officials were also assured of the government's awareness of their communal and personal concerns as public servants.
