The Twitter account of Pasig City Public Information Office (PIO) was hacked on Saturday night, tagging thousands of users in a tweet that promoted a user named @AzukiOfficial.
In a statement, Pasig PIO said they only regained access to the Twitter account at 7:30 A.M. on April 10.
"While we were able to retrieve the access to the account, we are still working on cleaning it up, specifically deleting the thousands of tweets made by the hacker," it said in a statement.
"We apologize to the owners of the Twitter accounts who have been tagged to the aforementioned tweet and to everyone who has been inconvenienced due to this hacking incident."
The Pasig PIO extended its gratitude to the public who were able to flag the account, specifically to Sei Salvador of @TwitterGov for helping the office regain access to the Twitter account.
The local department then assured that they have implemented further security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
"Moving forward, the Pasig City PIO has instituted mechanisms concerning the strict and limited access to this account to ensure that future hacking incidents such as this will be avoided."
