Malacañang announced on Friday the suspension of work in government offices and classes at all levels in Manila and Pasay on January 13 in observance of the Iglesia Ni Cristo's "National Rally for Peace."
The announcement was made through Memorandum Circular No. 76, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.
Malacañang stated that the suspension was due to the large number of participants expected to travel to and within the cities of Manila and Pasay.
"However, those agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue their operations and render the necessary services," the Memorandum indicated.
"The suspension of work in private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads," it further added.
Earlier, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recommended the suspension of work and classes in light of the upcoming rally.
In an exclusive interview with DZRH’s Dos Por Dos, MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes stated that the anticipated arrival of thousands of INC members from Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon is expected to significantly impact traffic in the capital.
"Personally, I recommended na i-include not only but also Pasay kasi sa amin pong palagay, mag-spill over po sa Pasay ‘yun pong traffic and congestion ng mga lansangan Naghihintay po ako ng Executive Order galing po sa Malacanang," said Artes.
The religious organization previously announced that it will hold a rally for peace in support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s call to not push through with the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Duterte is currently facing three impeachment complaints on various grounds, including betrayal of public trust.
