President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has proclaimed the first Friday next month, June 6, a regular holiday nationwide in observance of Eidul Adha.

Proclamation 911, issued on Wednesday, May 21, cited Republic Act No. 9849, which declared the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the 12th month in the 1446 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar, a national holiday, as well as the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos’ recommendation.

The Eidul Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is considered one of the two greatest feasts of Islam, the other being Eid al-Fitr. Eidul Adha commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) and God’s provision of a ransom in his place.
