The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that the country might experience 'extreme events' prior to the onset of El Niño.
Dr. Esperanza Cayanan, Deputy Administrator for Research and Development of PAGASA, mentioned that El Niño hit the Philippines in 2009 following the occurrence of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
"Maraming ulan ang binuhos ng mga bagyo na ito and then pumasok yung impact ng El Niño during the last quarter of 2009," Cayanan said on Wednesday, May 3, during DZRH's Dos Por Dos.
PAGASA expects that the Philippines will also experience heavy rains before El Niño kicks in during the last quarter of 2023.
Cayanan said that El Niño could start as early as November and last until the first quarter of 2024.
PAGASA issued an El Niño alert on Tuesday, May 2, which meant that the weather phenomenon has an 80 percent chance or more to occur.
