Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Ana Solis dismissed the possibility of a heatwave hitting the Philippines.
During a press conference held by the National El Niño Team, Solis emphasized that the Philippines, being a tropical country, naturally experiences warm and humid weather.
"Hindi naman possible na nangyayari 'yon kasi nandito tayo sa tropical country na talagang natural na warm and humid tayo. Pero 'yung pagtaas ng pagitan ng warm temperature [ay] hindi naman gano'n na heatwave siya," she pointed out.
Unlike temperate countries in Europe situated in the northern hemisphere, the Philippines does not encounter extreme or excessively high temperatures that result in a heatwave.
However, Solis issued a warning, stating that the Philippines might encounter successive periods of hot temperatures in 2024, which could be considered one of the warmest years globally.
Earlier, the world recorded its hottest day with an average daily air temperature of 17.18 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, PAGASA recently announced that the weak El Niño has begun in the Tropical Pacific and may strengthen in the next months.
