The state weather bureau declared on Friday, June 2 the official start of the rainy season in the country.

In a statement, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) cited that the passage of Super Typhoon Betty along with the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat over the past weeks has signified the beginning of the wet season.

"However, breaks in rainfall events (also known as monsoon breaks) may occur, which can last several days or weeks," it noted.

In the next few months, the state weather bureau said the country may transition to El Niño season and this may persist until the first quarter of 2024.

El Niño is expected to cause dry spells and droughts in some areas.

But PAGASA said enhanced Habagat may bring above-normal rainfall conditions over the western part of the country.

"The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the impact of the rainy season," it said further.
