Boxers Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio will serve as the flag-bearers of the Philippines in the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino revealed on Tuesday, June 18, that they initially wanted Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz to carry the Philippine flag in the opening ceremony but she failed to book a spot to the Paris Games.
Tolentino mentioned that Paalam and Petecio both won silver medals in the last Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.
"Sana si Hidilyn dahil siya yung naka-gold. Unfortunately, hindi siya nag-qualify kaya yung next in rank, sa palagay namin, ay karapat dapat," Tolentino said during DZRH's Dos Por Dos.
Petecio earned a ticket to the Olympics during the World Qualification Tournament last March in Busto Arsizio, Italy, while Paalam snagged a slot in the Paris Games during the qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand this month.
The 2024 Olympics will formally open on July 26 and run until August 11.
