The country's very own ₱1,000 polymer banknote, which features the Philippine eagle and Sampaguita, won the “Bank Note of the Year Award” for 2022.
The award was given by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), a non-profit educational organization.
According to IBNS, out of the 19 banknotes from various countries nominated, "the Philippines 1000 Piso note was the overwhelming favorite."
"The Philippines successful design in eye-pleasing blue combines an endangered species with an environmental motif. The 1000 Piso note is similar in width but slightly longer than U.S. greenbacks," IBNS said.
Meanwhile, the following banknotes were the close runners-up:
- Northern Ireland’s 50 Pound bill
- Scotland’s 100 Pound note
- Algeria’s 2000 Dinar
- Barbados' 50-dollar
- Egypt’s 10-pound
According to the organization, all six countries that won this year's IBNS Banknote of the Year competitions have miniature arts that represent their respective nation's prevalent themes.
"These winners should help provide a superb template as other countries consider how they eventually design and promote their own new banknotes," it added.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) first released the ₱1,000 polymer banknote to banks for circulation in April 2022.
