A total of 574,067 liters of oily waste was collected by the Harbor Star, from August 19 to 27, 2024 during the ongoing recovery operations, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Wednesday.
As of 7:30 PM on Tuesday, August 27, the PCG shared the following breakdown of the oil collected:
- August 19 - 2,350 liters
- August 20 - 36,100 liters
- August 21 - 42,026 liters
- August 22 - 81,136 liters
- August 23 - 17,103 liters
- August 24 - 121,724 liters
- August 25 - 101,603 liters
- August 26 - 104,202 liters
- August 27 - 67,871 liters
During the operation on Tuesday, the rate of oily waste flow was 13,357 liters per hour. However, siphoning operations were temporarily halted when the booster pump had to be changed.
Two wing van trucks arrived for the hauling of oil-contaminated waste materials at the Seafront Shipyard on the days of the operations.
“BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407), BRP Boracay (FPB-2401), and BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403) monitored the ongoing siphoning operation and utilized water cannon to agitate minimal oil sheen at ground zero,” the PCG said.
Meanwhile, continued re-sealing and patching operations were conducted for the MTKR Jason Bradley’s manhole and air vents. Coastal patrols were conducted by the Oil Spill Response Team (OSRT), while the BRP Boracay (FPB-2401) surveyed the vicinity waters near the sunken vessel.
The same operations were done for the MV Mirola 1. Minimal oil sheen was properly contained using oil spill booms.
