The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported on Monday that several drivers and dispatchers yielded negative results in a random drug test conducted during an inspection of bus terminals in Cubao, Quezon City.
In an exclusive interview with DZRH, MMDA Traffic Enforcement Chief Atty. Victor Nuñez confirmed that all of the more than 50 individuals tested by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) passed and were found to be in proper condition to travel this Holy Week season.
In addition to checking the roadworthiness of buses, government agencies also made sure that those behind the wheel are in good health.
“Out of more than 50 drivers na na-test [ay] wala hong nag-positive kahit isa. So at least magandang balita iyon," said Nuñez.
Nuñez further emphasized that those found with violations or deficiencies—whether individuals or vehicles—will automatically be prohibited from operating or traveling.
“Halimbawa pudpod ang mga gulong, walang lisensya ang driver, hindi na ‘yan dapat magbyahe, at kung mag-positive naman, subject naman ‘yan sa confirmatory [test],” Nuñez explained.
“Outright din iyan, hindi na rin papabyahein ang driver na nag-positive sa drug test,” he added.
Meanwhile, the MMDA anticipates that the exodus of commuters from Metro Manila will likely occur on Holy Wednesday.
The MMDA is set to enforce a 'No Absent, No Leave' policy for over 2,000 of its personnel from April 16 to 21.
In addition to provincial buses, the MMDA is also closely monitoring the potential increase in colorum or unauthorized vehicles this season.
