On Saturday, over 178,000 liters of oil from the sunken MTKR Terranova were collected during the ongoing recovery operations in Bataan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.
The PCG posted an update on the recovery operation on Friday, August 23. According to the PCG, the Harbor Star reported that a total of 178,715 liters of oil were collected from August 19 to 23, 2024.
The breakdown provided by PCG tracks the amount of oil collected on each date:
- 19 Aug - 2,350 liters
- 20 Aug - 36,100 liters
- 21 Aug - 42,026 liters
- 22 Aug - 81,136 liters
- 23 Aug - 17,103 liters
During the operation on August 23, the Harbor Star indicated that the oil flow rate was at 2,966 liters per hour. The contracted salvor's booster pump was also immediately repaired so that operations could resume.
Underwater operations were also conducted by the Coast Guard divers to monitor and inspect the vessel.
Meanwhile, they reported that the BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) observed rainbow and transparent oil sheen northeast off ground zero. The MTUG Minkar and MTUG Zaniah, including the towed spill boom and skimmer, were deployed to contain the sighted oil sheen in the area.
Updates on the other vessels are as follows:
MTKR Jason Bradley
Resealing and patching of the manhole and air vents were continued by the contracted salvor, FES Challenger in preparation for the refloating operation. The joint oil spill response team also conducted seaborne patrol and observed no oil sheen in the vicinity waters.
MV Mirola 1
Seawater siphoning and patching on the vessel was continued by the contracted slavor, Morning Star.
Recovery operations began after the consecutive sinking of the three vessels in Bataan caused an oil spill in several areas within and outside the province.
