Ormoc City was placed under a state of calamity on Thursday following a spike in dengue cases since the onset of the year.

In a Facebook post, the City Government of Ormoc announced the Resolution No. 2024-234 passed by the 16th Sangguniang Panlungsod, a resolution declaring the City of Ormoc under a State of Calamity due to a Dengue outbreak.

The Ormoc City Health Board and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) initially gave the recommendation to put the city under a state of calamity due to the concerning rise in dengue cases in the municipality.

The recommendation prompted City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez to formally request that the city council declare Ormoc under a state of calamity.

Based on a presented data, there have been a total of 444 dengue cases in the city from January 1 to August 3, 2024. Additionally, the City Health Office noted that this number is 225% higher compared to the same period last year.

The state of calamity is effective for one year from the date it is declared but may be terminated earlier if recommended by the CDRRMC.
