The oil spill from the sunken oil tanker MT Princess Empress in Oriental Mindoro has reached Caluya, Antique, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced on Saturday.

"Ayon sa Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Western Visayas, umabot na sa CALUYA, ANTIQUE ang OIL SPILL kasunod ng paglubog ng MT PRINCESS EMPRESS sa Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, noong ika-28 ng Pebrero 2023," it said in a Facebook post.

PCG said it has monitored the three barangays in Caluya and is currently undertaking a shoreline clean-up.

Citing information from the local government of Liwagao Island, the Coast Guard said at least 600 residents, or 150 families, are affected by the oil spillage in Caluya.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. said on Friday that he has tapped the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWD) to provide aid for affected families and individuals.

On February 28, an oil tanker carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil submerged due to engine overheating in the vicinity of Tablas Island in Romblon.
