On Sunday, Greenpeace Philippines reported that the oil spill from the capsized tanker MT Terra Nova that sank in Limay, Bataan has reached the waters of Hagonoy, Bulacan.
"A thick layer of oil has been seen approx. 4km from the coastline at 12:00 GMT+8 on Sunday," the non-profit organization mentioned in a Facebook post.
It is feared that neigboring provinces of Cavite and Pampanga will also be affected if the situation escalated and not contained promptly.
Greenpeace highlighted that Filipino coastal communities are bracing for an 'imminent' environmental disaster while recovering from severe flooding experienced recently following the wrath of Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon.
The organization called for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to hold the fossil fuel industry and polluters accountable for the damages inflicted to the ecosystems, community, livelihood, and health.
The MT Terra Nova carrying 1,494 metric tons of industrial fuel sank 3.6 nautical miles east of Lamao Point and caused an oil spill in Bataan early Thursday.
Following the incident, PBBM formed an Inter-agency task force that will set its eye on addressing the possible effects of the oil spill.
