Filipino pole-vaulter EJ Obiena set a new Asian record.
Obiena cleared 5.93 meters in the ISTAF tournament in Berlin, Germany on Friday, February 23, to bag his second gold medal for 2024, and best the record set by Igor Potapovich of Kazakhstan for indoor men's pole vault.
The Filipino pole-vaulter needed two attempts to beat the previous record of 5.92 meters set by Potapovich in 1998.
Tray Oates of the United States placed second after clearing 5.75 meter mark, while Robert Sobera of Poland won the bronze medal with a height of 5.66 meters.
Aside from Asian record for indoor pole-vault, Obiena also currently holds the Asian record for outdoor pole-vault after he cleared the six-meter mark last 2023.
Obiena currently prepares for his participation in the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, United Kingdom in March.
