Two accomplished Filipino athletes, Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena and Cebu's pride skateboarder Margielyn Didal, have been chosen to lead the Philippine delegation during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games as flag-bearers.
During the send-off ceremony for the athletes embarking on the international stage, Philippine Olympic Committee President Abrahan "Bambol" Tolentino made the announcement of their significant role in carrying the national flag.
Margielyn Didal made history for the Philippines by clinching the gold medal in skateboarding at the 2018 Asian Games. Additionally, she also brought home two medals from the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
On the other hand, EJ Obiena finished in 7th place during the 2018 Asian Games, but he has now risen to the world number 3 ranking in pole vaulting.
Many are hopeful that he will secure a medal this year. Obiena has showcased an impressive performance in his pole vaulting journey, securing multiple gold medals and achieving 11 consecutive podium finishes this year.
He is also the first Filipino athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Philippines will be sending a total of 395 athletes to compete in 27 sports during the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
The Asian Games are scheduled to commence on September 23 at the Hangzhou Sports Park Stadium.
