The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Tuesday said it condemned the murder of radio commentator Percival Mabasa also known as Percy Lapid, who was shot dead in Las Piñas City.
In a statement, the NUJP said the killing of Lapid shows the danger of journalism as a profession in the country.
“[T]he incident took place in Metro Manila indicates how brazen the perpetrators were, and how authorities have failed to protect journalists as well as ordinary citizens from harm,” it said.
Lapid is the second journalist killed under the Marcos administration, after radio broadcaster Rey Blanco Mabinay was stabbed to death in Negros Oriental last Sept. 18, the NUJP noted.
He is the host of the radio show “Lapid Fire" on DWBL 1242.
In his recent commentaries uploaded on Youtube, he openly spoke against red-tagging, particularly the recent harassment of Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Marlo Magdoza-Malagar.
Lapid had also commented on widespread fake news, online trolls, and issues involving the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO).
“We condole with Lapid's family, including his brother and veteran journalist Roy Mabasa. We call on the public to join us in condemning yet another murder of a journalist,” the NUJP said.
The organization urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to hold the suspects accountable.
