The voice behind Japan's beloved robotic cat from the future died from natural causes on September 29 at age 90, her agency Actors Seven confirmed on Friday, October 11.
Nobuyo Oyama was the long-time voice actress behind the stubborn blue and white cat Doraemon, from 1979 to 2005. The former's raspy and distinct voice was part of why the beloved 70s anime gained such popularity.
The anime series has been watched by millions in Japan and the world. It has been translated into several languages, including its original manga, and was released in 17 countries.
In 2008, Doraemon was appointed as an anime ambassador by the government.
In 2001, the voice actress was diagnosed with rectal cancer. The diagnosis prompted her retirement from all of her roles, besides Doraemon. However, she retired from the role as well, a few years later.
“I hope Doraemon will still be a beloved character in the distant future,” Oyama said before her retirement.
The funeral for the voice actress will be held privately by her relatives.
