MANILA – The Philippine Embassy in Tripoli, Libya confirms that there are no reported Filipinos hurt in the devastating floods brought about by the Mediterranean storm Daniel.
In a message to the media, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Ma. Teresita C. Daza said that “there are no reported Filipino casualties” due to the flooding in Libya’s eastern city of Derna.
According to Daza, there are an estimated 1,100 Filipinos presently working in Eastern Libya, of which 90 are residing in areas badly hit by Storm Daniel.
The Philippine Embassy in Tripoli sent a breakdown of Filipinos in the most affected areas in Libya based on the Tripoli PE’s ATN Mapping, where 30 are in the district of Dema (5 in the city of Dema and 25 in Umm al Rizam), 50 in the district of Jabel al Akhdar, and 10 in Tobruk.
Daza said that Filipinos in these areas are mostly nurses and clinical instructors.
As of the latest advisory, the community coordinators in the area said that the Filipinos, as nurses, continue to work in hospitals amid the flooding but were relocated to higher ground by hospital management.
Communication is still difficult as electricity has not been restored in most areas.
The Embassy is continuously monitoring and reaching out to the Filipino community leaders in Libya to ensure that Filipinos in the country are safe and given assistance when needed.
