The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) dismissed calls to extend the period of voter registration beyond January 31, 2023.
COMELEC chairperson George Garcia said, that the poll body has already reached the target number of newly-registered voters for the period of December 12, 2022, until January 31, 2023.
"Mas maganda na pinaninindigan natin, kapag may date ng deadline, iyon ang deadline. Hindi tayo naniniwala lagi na may extension," Garcia said during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.
Garcia said that COMELEC logged more than 1.3 million newly registered voters as of Monday, January 30.
"Ang nagpunta naman sa lahat ng registration sites dahil sa ibang dahilan, dahil sa maaring nagpapalipat ng registration, o nagpapapalit ng pangalan, o may pinapa-correct sila, ay almost 2.2 million," Garcia added.
