A newly-elected barangay captain distributed free upos, or calabash gourds, to his constituents in Brgy. Boclod in the Municipality of San Jose, Camarines Sur on Thursday, Nov. 9.
In a Facebook live video posted by user Jimmy Buenaflor, it can be seen that the barangay captain displayed a pile of fresh upo on the side of the road.
Two white banners were displayed to inform residents that the upos are free and not for sale. The text on the banners read, "Maligayang PaskUPO sa Gabos!" and "Libre na upo!".
The newly-elected barangay captain was also seen personally handing out the upos to his constituents.
According to DZRH Naga, the barangay captain is identified as Jimmy Buenaflor, who won against the wife of the incumbent barangay captain in the last October 30 polls.
Buenaflor told DZRH Naga that he personally planted and grew the upo and they were originally selling these.
"Dahil mahina ang bentahan ng upo na umaabot na lamang sa tatlong piso kada piraso ang bentahan kaya napagdesisyonan ng kaniyang pamilya na ipamigay na lamang ito sa mga kabarangay," DZRH Naga captioned.
The ka-barangays of Buenaflor thanked him for his good deeds and said they expected him to be a good leader during his term.
