The newly built Quezon City (QC) jail facility in Payatas, Quezon City has been turned over to the Bureau of Jail and Management and Penology (BJMP).
This new facility was built on two hectares of land that is donated by the local government of QC to the BJMP.
According to jail superintendent Michelle Ng Bonto, the new facility has a five-story accommodation with three buildings that make up 440 cells that has a measurement of 47 m2 (square meter) per ten people deprived of liberty (PDL).
Each cell has a water source, light, comfort room, and ventilation based on the standard requirements of the international committee of the Red Cross.
It also houses a non-contact visiting area, laundry area, livelihood training, sports, and recreational areas, and medical infirmary.
The new jail facility has an ideal capacity of 4400 PDLs with a total cell area of 20, 880 m2. Based on the United Nations (UN) minimum standards the ideal living area of the PDL is 4.7 m2.
The construction began in 2018 that was funded with PHP 1.4 billion. The QC local government unit (LGU) provided Php 39 million for the first phase of the construction of the perimeter fence and another Php 100 million for the second phase to complete the perimeter fence.
