President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced the discovery of a new natural gas field, named Malampaya East 1 (MAE-1), located five kilometers east of the Malampaya field in Palawan.

According to Marcos Jr., the MAE-1 field contains an estimated 98 billion cubic feet of natural gas, equivalent to roughly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

This volume could supply power to more than 5.7 million households, 9,500 buildings, and nearly 200,000 schools annually over an extended period.

“Aside from the natural gas, the discovery also includes condensing, which is a high-value liquid fuel. This additional resource can help support the government’s efforts for the stabilization of our power supply,” Marcos Jr. said.

The President also highlighted the role of Filipino workers in the project, noting that the drilling was completed without accidents or environmental incidents.

“MAE-1 is the first milestone under the Malampaya Phase 4 campaign,” Marcos Jr. added, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to boost energy security and sustain long-term power supply.
