

The Philippines on Tuesday logged 5,434 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the nationwide tally to 2,861,119.
In its latest data, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that the active cases rose to 29,809 with 889 are asymptomatic, 24,026 are mild, 3,020 are moderate, 1,546 are severe, and 328 are critical.
Of the 5,434 new infections, the DOH said 5,395 or 99 percent occurred within the last 14 days from December 22, 2021, to January 4, 2022.
The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were Metro Manila with 3,826 or 71 percent, CALABARZON with 864 or 16 percent, and Central Luzon with 333 or 6 percent.
The country's positivity rate also climbed to 26.2 percent from January 3's positivity rate of 20.7 percent.
Meanwhile, 611 more patients recovered from the viral illness, bringing the recovery tally to 2,779,706. The death toll climbed to 51,604, with 18 fatalities.
Of the 18 fatalities, DOH said two happened in January 2022 (11 percent), eight in December 2021 (44 percent), two in November 2021 (11 percent), three in October 2021 (17 percent), one in August 2021 (6 percent), and two in July 2021 (11 percent).
At least 13 duplicates which are recoveries, and 121 negative cases, which include 119 recoveries were removed from the total caseload.
Further, 14 recoveries were reclassified as fatalities after final validation.
