The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) board has approved the ₱170 billion rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) through the private and public partnership (PPP), NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan announced on Wednesday, July 19.

"Among the three new approved projects is the solicited proposal to rehabilitate, operate, expand, and transfer the Ninoy Aquino International Airport PPP project," Balisacan announced in a press briefing at Malacañáng.

He said the rehabilitation seeks to address long-standing issues at NAIA, such as the inadequate capacity of passenger terminal buildings and restricted aircraft movement.

Baliscan mentioned that the ₱170 billion rehabilitation is expected to increase the passenger capacity to 62 million passengers from 35 million passengers, while the traffic movement will expand to 48 from 40 per hour.

Balisacan noted that the rehabilitation project will cover the four NAIA terminals.

He said that the NAIA rehabilitation project will begin as soon as the winning bidder has been identified.

"As early as next year, we could have the project started," Balisacan added.
