More than 270,000 aspiring candidates have filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) on the first day of filing for the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Based on Comelec's Election Records and Statistics Department data released on Tuesday, August 29, a total of 273,454 aspirants in 42,001 barangays in 81 provinces have filed their COCs.
The poll body noted that only the province of South Cotabato has yet to report the total number of aspirants for BSKE.
Most of the aspiring candidates are male with 177,125 or 64.77 percent of the total number.
The female candidates are 96,329 or 35.23 percent of the total number.
For the barangay election, the position of Sangguniang Barangay member has 143,638 total aspirants who filed their COCs while the Punong barangay has 21,657.
For the SK polls, 91,074 aspirants filed COC for the position of SK member while 17,085 for SK chairperson.

The poll body said there are 627,016 seats for this year's BSKE.
The COC filing began on Monday, August 28 and this will run until Saturday, September 2.
Aspirants can file their COCs from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Alongside the filing, a gun ban took effect, and checkpoints are now set up nationwide for the October polls.
