The New Bilibid Prison was placed under red alert on Tuesday after a scuffle was reported inside the maximum security compound leaving one inmate dead and nine others injured.
According to the Bureau of Corrections, two members of the Bahala Na Gang and the Batang City Jail were involved in an altercation that was settled before they split ways.
However, one inmate took out a gun and began shooting at a separate area of the prison, striking numerous people deprived of liberty (PDLs).
During the uproar, another detainee was stabbed with an ice pick and proclaimed dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Authorities are still looking into whether this is related to the uproar.
BuCor's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team and other personnel performed a clearing operation and recovered one (1) cal. 45, two (2) aguanes, and twelve (12) rounds of ammo at the scene.
The New Bilibid Prison was placed on "red alert" following the event. All visits to the jail have been temporarily halted.
BuCor Acting Superintendent J/SINSP. Angelina Bautista stated that an inquiry into the event is already underway.
The officer of the day, the keeper, and MaXeCom's OIC were all removed from their duties.
