NBI warns public against 'rage bait,' fake news on social media
by Alessandra C. Frianela30 April 2025

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) cautioned the public about the increasing presence of rage bait and fake news on social media, urging users to be vigilant and critical of the content they encounter.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago explained that “rage bait” refers to viral social media posts designed to provoke anger among users. Such posts generate increased engagement and reactions, which further boost their visibility on social media platforms.

Santiago reiterated that "people should be aware of what a rage bait is" and exercise caution when interacting with it.

He also advised the public to pause and reflect before responding to rage bait posts, noting that this mindful approach can prevent the content from gaining further traction through platform algorithms.

Furthermore, the NBI Director reminded the public that social media is not always a reliable source of information, urging them to seek news only from reputable media organizations and verified creators.

He emphasized that recognizing the difference between misinformation and verified facts begins with understanding and identifying credible primary and secondary sources.

Primary sources refer to first-hand accounts or direct evidence, while secondary sources involve the interpretation or analysis of primary sources, often produced by subject matter experts.

Ultimately, Santiago urged the public to verify the accuracy of information circulating on social media and to assess the reliability of the source before engaging with or sharing it.
