NBI data breach considered stunt, no political motivation — cybersecurity group
by Jim Fernandez21 January 2025

A cybersecurity advocacy group believes someone “seeking attention” was responsible for the recent National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) data breach, and that China is uninvolved.

“The attack does not appear to be politically motivated. Evidence suggests it was likely carried out by a script kiddie or someone seeking attention after consistently mocking the NBI’s cybersecurity defenses,” Deep Web Konek said.

A “script kiddie” is an amateur hacker who exploits a system’s weaknesses using pre-written scripts or tools. Moreover, the culprit or “threat actor” is said to be from either India, Vietnam, or Bangladesh, according to initial findings.

“There is no indication of involvement from Chinese actors in this breach,” the cybersecurity organization stated.

Deep Web Konek’s media arm, Kukublan Philippines, reported on Sunday of a “massive data breach” which has compromised millions of Filipino citizen’s records.

“The breach, reportedly over 3.6 GB in size, is said to include more than 45 million rows of data from 2016-2024,” the group said.

Files uploaded into the dark web indicate the leaked database included full names, addresses, transaction IDs, contact information, and account holders’ detailed location data.

In a report by RH 15's Jecelle Ricafort, the NBI claimed that no data in their possession was compromised. The breach reportedly originated from a third-party provider handling clearance applications, according to NBI Director Jaime Santiago.

Deep Web Konek urged content creators to recognize the severity of the issue, and discouraged them from spreading misinformation or exploiting the incident for political content.

The group maintained that they remain non-partisan and committed to advocating for digital rights and privacy.
