Nazareno 2023: The stories of devotees
by Mhillen Nicole Borja10 January 2023

Attending the Feast of the Black Nazarene has been a religious vow for Filipino Catholics brought by their wishes, miracles, and other reasons. Behind strong faith, every devotee has a story to tell.

During the DZRH Nazareno 2023 coverage, different stories were unveiled as they walked from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church.

Among those was Aling Panny, 45, who started as a devotee after her father's death 30 years ago. Her three decades in faith for the Black Nazarene was her reason for surviving as a breadwinner of the family.

"Taun-taon po kaming pumupunta dito [Feast of the Black Nazarene]. Naging deboto po kami magmula nung mawala 'yung father ko. Kumbaga, dun po kami sa kanya kumapit magmula nung mawalan kami ng tatay kasi ako ang naging breadwinner," she shared.

A 31-year-old mother also shared her story as a devotee for ten years. According to her, the Black Nazarene helped her family survive the pandemic.

Despite losing her job due to the pandemic, her husband immediately recovered and got hired believing that it is through their faith. For this year's celebration, she wishes to have a second child.

Gerald Jayme, a devotee from Navotas, joined the Walk of Faith with his crutches as he was born with polio. To parade the replica of the image, he brought it on the procession and placed the Nazarene on his head.

He shared that his wish for the Black Nazarene was salvation for everyone.

The 'Walk of Faith' was followed by other activities including a band parade and vigil for the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

The Concelebrated Mass or Misa Mayor started at 12:00 a.m. on January 9.
