The P1 billion set aside to compensate victims of the 2017 Marawi siege was nearly wiped out on the first day of processing claims, the head of the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) told a panel of the House of Representatives on Monday.
During a session, MCB chairperson Maisara Latiph told the House ad hoc committee that the board received more than P800 million in claims when it started accepting compensation applications on July 4.
"We were thinking 'yung P1 billion na allocation for this year and next year di po kakayanin nung i-a-adjudicate namin na amount. Kasi ngayon pa lang 1 month pa lang 2,073 na tao na na-process namin," Latiph said in an Ad Hoc Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation hearing.
"I stand corrected 1 day lang po pala 'yun. It's just one day, July 4 alone. For July 4 lang po. This is existing data."
The MCB said that it is anticipating paying on or before December to all those who have filed, noting that the payment of compensation might start this month of August.
The Marawi siege victims' heirs are entitled to compensation amounting to P350,000.
Residents with damaged real estate could receive a package worth P15,000, and those with damaged personal property could receive P12,000.
The floor space of a demolished building can be given at P18,000 per square meter.
