The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Muslim Affairs has proposed the establishment of a prison dedicted for Muslim inmates, aiming to allow them to freely practice their religion and culture.
According to the Bureau of Correction's (BuCor) Media, Presidential Adviser on Muslim Affairs Almarim Tillah proposed Muslim inmates' separation to BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang during a meeting.
"This initiative, according to Tillah could significantly benefit Muslim PDLs, particularly in the preservation of Muslim Culture even inside the penal institutions," the agency's media arm said in a press release posted on Saturday, February 24.
BuCor Media added that the presidential advisor cited that the proposal's aim is also to improve prison management and minimize violence and conflict among inmates inside the correctional facilities.
Catapang reportedly vowed to discuss the proposal with Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla.
Based on the latest data from the corrections bureau, 2,803 Muslim inmates are presently confined in penal and prisons nationwide.
While 657 Muslim inmates have been released since Remulla took the helm of the justice department.
