The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Wednesday filed murder charges against Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. for his alleged involvement in the killing of Governor Roel Degamo last March.
The NBI, led by Director Medardo de Lemos, arrived at the Department of Justice (DOJ) office with boxes of documents to file the charges against the suspended lawmaker, who is still at large.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that Teves is facing murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder charges. Although the complaints have not been released to the media yet.
The Pamplona town massacre last March resulted in the deaths of Governor Degamo and nine others, with 17 more injured. While meeting with some of his constituents, armed men entered his compound and opened fire.
Remulla claims that Teves was the mastermind behind the attack and provided funds for the planning and firearms used. However, Teves has denied these allegations.
On Tuesday, the DOJ chief said that Teves will return to the Philippines on Wednesday, but Teves dismissed this as “fake news.”
