A total of 3 volcanic earthquakes, 511 rockfall events, and 38 Pyroclastic Density Current (PDC) events were observed in Mayon Volcano in Albay province over the past 24 hours, the state seismologist said in its latest monitoring released Tuesday, July 11.
As compared to Phivolcs' monitoring on Monday, the number of rockfall events jumped from 325 to 511.
The state seismologist said the 38 PDCs spewed by Mayon Volcano were "generated by partial collapses from the summit lava dome" as well as the "advancing front and margins of lava flows."
It said that the recorded PDCs went toward the Basud, Mi-isi, and Bonga Gullies within 4 kilometers from the summit crater.
The Public Information Office (PIO) of the Municipality of Camalig has captured the lava-front PDCs that occured on Monday afternoon.
"Thin ashfall was reported in some areas of Brgy. Mabinit, Legazpi City, Brgy. Budiao and Brgy. Salvacion, Daraga, and Camalig, Albay," Phivolcs said.
Meanwhile, the very slow effusion of lava remained at the length of 2,800 kilometers and 1,400 kilometers along Mi-isi and Bonga Gullies.
The lava feed has trigged debris to collapse to 4,000 meters along the Basud channel.
Mount Mayon also effused 800 meters-high steam-laden plumes due to continuous moderate degassing and 721 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux (SO2) a day.
Phivolcs said Mayon Volcano still shows signs of inflation which means that the magma is present at the underneath surface of the summit crater.
The state seismologists maintained the Alert Level 3 over the Mayon Vlocano which means that residents living within the six-kiometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) surrounding Mayon must remain in taking shelter in evacuation centers.
