Mount Mayon Volcano in Albay province remains under Alert Level 2 due to its increasing unrest on Thursday, June 8.

In its latest bulletin issued at 8 AM, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated that 98 rockfall events have been recorded since Wednesday, and rockfall events occured and these last for 2 to 3 minutes.

“Thin brownish ash from the rockfalls also drifted to the general south. Continuous moderate degassing from the summit crater produced steam-laden plumes that were bent and drifted to the general south,” Phivolcs added.

The state seismologist said that Taal emitted 332 tonnes of sulfur dioxide (SO2) on June 7, and its upper slopes have been inflating since February.

“Longer-term ground deformation parameters based on EDM, precise leveling, continuous GPS, and electronic tilt monitoring indicate that Mayon is still inflated, especially on the northwest and southeast,” it said.

Phivolcs reminded the public to refrain from entering the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and to be cautious of possible sudden explosions, rockfalls, and landslides.

The public is also advised to cover their nose and mouth with a damp, clean cloth, or dust mask in case an ashfall occurs.

“DOST-PHIVOLCS maintains close monitoring of Mayon Volcano and any new development will be communicated to all concerned stakeholders,” it said.

Meanwhile, interviewed during DZRH's Damdaming Bayan, Phivolcs Resident Volcanologist Mt. Mayon Observatory Paul Karlson Alanis said that the towns of Camalig, Daraga, Legazpi, and Sto. Domingo would be possibly affected by the possible erruption.

"Dalawa po ang scenario na tinitingnan natin. 'Yung unang scenario ay baka nag-iipon ng lakas ang Mount Mayon Volcano, bumebwelo para sa isang malaking eruption gaya noong 2018,"he explained.

"Ang isa scenario naman, baka tahimik lang na maglalabas ng mainit na bato at minsang maliliit na pagputok," Alanis added.

Albay farmer Mang Francisco Vilbar expressed his fear for their plants and vegetable crops such as sayote, kamatis, and kalabasa.

"Bagong tanim lang po ito. Mayroon din po kaming kalabaw," he added.
