The restive Mayon Volcano in Albay province had one volcanic earthquake and 372 rockfall events in the past 24-hour period, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its latest bulletin released on Wednesday.
The volcanic earthquake had significantly declined as Phivolcs recorded 107 quakes on Tuesday. But the rockfalls has increased — from 241 logged earlier to 372.
The Mayon Volcano also continuously exhibits a very slow effusion of fiery lava flow for the 17th day, Philvocs said.
The lava has reached lengths of 1.6 kilometers along Mi-isi Gully and 1.2 kilometers along Bonga Gully.
The state seismologist said it also observed that the Mayon Volcano had 7 dome-collapse pyroclastic density current events (PDC) and Sulfur Dioxide Flux which averaged 964 tonnes a day.
The steam-laden plumes reached a height of 800 meters before it drifted to the west-northwest.
Phivolcs’s EDM, precise leveling, continuous GPS, and electronic tilt monitoring has indicated that the edifice of Mayon Volcano, especially on the northwest and southeast, remains inflated.
Phivolcs retained Alert Level 3 in Mayon Volcano due to its “relatively high level of unrest.”
Earlier, the state seismologist said the current restive activities in the country’s active volcano may persist for a few months.
It did not cross out the possibility that Alert Level 4 and Alert Level 5 may be hoisted.
