The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Wednesday that Mayon Volcano had 7 volcanic earthquakes and 309 rockfall events in the last 24 hours.

This is slightly higher than the 1 volcanic earthquake and 221 rockfall events recorded on Tuesday.

Based on Phivolcs' 8 AM bulletin, the country’s most active volcano also emitted 7 pyroclastic density currents (PDC) that lasted for 4 minutes and 149 tonnes of sulfur dioxide.

The "very slow lava" effused by the Mayon volcano's summit crater reached the Miisi and Bonga gullies within approximately 1,000 kilometers.

Phivolcs also observed fair crater glow or “banaag” and incandescent rockfall shed from new fluidal lava at the summit of Mayon Volcano.

“Longer-term ground deformation parameters based on EDM, precise leveling, continuous GPS, and electronic tilt monitoring indicate that Mayon is still inflated, especially on the northwest and southeast,” Phivolcs said.

According to the state seismologist, heavy rainfall could cause “channel-confined lahars and sediment-laden streamflows in channels where PDC deposits were emplaced.”

Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 "which means that it is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days."

Phivolcs said aircraft flying close to the volcano’s summit are still restricted as “ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous."

It forecasted that ash fall events may most likely occur on the south side of the volcano.

The latest monitoring of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as of Wednesday, the local government units of Albay province have evacuated 3,701 families or 13,179 individuals living within the 6-kilometers and 7-kilometer danger zone of Mayon Volcano.
