There was an increase in the number of seismic activities on Mt. Bulusan, which is located in Sorsogon Province, according to the report made by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday, January 2.
The state seismologist explained in its 8:00 p.m. advisory that there have been 116 earthquakes reported since 9:00 p.m. of December 29, 2029, with 110 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes associated with rock that fractured under the southern flanks at depths of two to six kilometers, adding that the six were low-frequency tremors associated with the volcanic fluid movement.
Moreover, it stated that the seismic activity may indicate the hydrothermal processes that happen under the volcano, which may lead to steam-driven eruptions at any of the summit vents.
As such, the agency urged the people not to enter the four-kilometer permanent danger zone, caused by the increased chances of phreatic eruptions.
Last October 25, an Alert Level 1 was raised due to Mt. Bulusan's increased volcanic activity.
