The management of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) would be refiling the petition seeking for an increase in fare this week, Transport Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT-3 officer-in-charge Jorjette Aquino confirmed on Monday, Dec. 4.
"Ang aming inaasahan ay makapag-submit kami ng aming notorized petition paper sa chairman ng rail regulatory unit ng DoTr [Department of Transportation] this week at inaasahan namin na within the next 2 weeks ay ma-issue-han kami ng public hearing," Aquino told reporters in a press briefing.
She said once approved, they are expecting that the fare hike will be implemented by the end of first quarter or beginning of second quarter of 2024.
"Baka end of March or beginning of April [ma-implement ang fare hike]," Aquino said.
According to the Transport Assistant Secretary for Railways, the last fare increase in MRT-3 was in 2015.
For their re-filed petition in 2024, Aquino said they are asking the transporation department for a P2.29 boarding fare and P0.21 per kilometer, similar to the fare hike of the Light Rail Transit System Line 1 (LRT-1) and Line 2 (LRT-2).
"If approved, the minimum fare will increase from P13 to P16, and the maximum fare (end-to-end) from P28 to P34," she said.
