A motorist claiming to be a security detail for boxer and former Senator Manny Pacquiao was intercepted by the Department of Transportation’s Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (DOTr-SAICT) for illegally using the EDSA Busway.
According to DOTr-SAICT, the driver was ticketed on Sunday at 3:00 PM near the Ortigas Busway Station (northbound). The vehicle was also reportedly using unauthorized blinkers and sirens while on the busway.
"SAICT operatives reported that a black Toyota van, leading a two-vehicle convoy, was seen using unauthorized blinkers and sirens while traveling on the restricted busway. The driver revealed being a security detail of former Senator Pacquiao," SAICT stated.
SAICT added that a passenger in the vehicle protested against relocating the convoy for proper ticketing. However, the convoy reportedly ignored authorities and fled the scene.
"The black Suburban SUV without a rear license plate led the evasion. The Toyota van later returned to accept citations for Disregarding Traffic Signs (DTS) and Illegal Use of Blinkers, prompting an SAICT investigation," the agency said.
Pacquiao’s security chief responds
Following the incident, Manny Pacquiao’s Head of Security, Jojo Cagumay, addressed concerns.
Cagumay clarified that Pacquiao was unaware of the incident and has since reinforced strict compliance with traffic regulations.
"The van was driven by one of our drivers with helpers on board. After being stopped, the driver left instead of complying with authorities. This was a mistake, and we take full responsibility."
Cagumay emphasized that Pacquiao values discipline and respect for the law and has reminded his team to adhere to traffic regulations.
"I reprimanded the driver and ordered him to return, apologize, and accept the traffic ticket. We do not tolerate any disregard for traffic laws."
Pacquiao’s team assured the public that necessary measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
"We apologize for this mistake and will ensure it does not happen again," it noted.
